

Monthly Thematic Units
A Year-Long Collection of Meaningful Educational Enrichment for Grades 3–6
Through 10 monthly thematic units, students explore what it means to think like experts—including mathematicians, scientists, engineers, and authors—while building critical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving skills.
Each unit combines Depth & Complexity thinking tools, STEM challenges, logic puzzles, close reading, writing activities, and project-based learning opportunities.
This first-month enrichment unit helps students develop the habits of curious, creative, and critical thinkers as they explore learning through the lens of a scholar. Through engaging activities, Depth & Complexity thinking tools, collaborative challenges, creative writing, STEM tasks, and problem-solving activities, students build classroom community while developing the skills needed for deeper learning all year long.
This unit of the Enrichment Collection helps students move beyond the ELA textbook and into the habits of skilled, thoughtful readers. Over four weeks, students strengthen comprehension, inference, and critical thinking through Depth & Complexity challenges, Socratic Seminars, logic puzzles, an Interactive Thinking Frame, and creative writing tasks that deepen their understanding of text and ideas.
This unit of the Enrichment Collection invites students to step into the role of problem-solvers and creators as they explore innovation across math, economics, social studies, and STEM. Over four weeks, students engage in Depth & Complexity challenges, logic puzzles, a Market Day math and economics project, and creative writing tasks that stretch their thinking and connect learning to real-world ideas.
This unit of the Enrichment Collection engages students in the mindset of engineers as they explore force, motion, and energy transfer. Over four weeks, students take on Depth & Complexity challenges, a Rube Goldberg Chain Reaction Challenge, logic puzzles, an Interactive Thinking Frame, and creative writing tasks that build understanding of how and why things move.
This unit immerses students in the creative world of illustrators as they explore how visual art brings stories and ideas to life. Over four weeks, students build artistic thinking and visual literacy through Depth & Complexity challenges, art projects, logic puzzles, an Interactive Thinking Frame, and creative writing prompts that deepen their understanding of illustration and visual storytelling.
This enrichment unit helps students think like mathematicians through the lens of Think Like a Mathematician, moving beyond computation into deeper mathematical reasoning. Over four weeks, students analyze patterns, solve complex problems, and make connections using Depth & Complexity tools. Through math challenges, logic puzzles, Socratic Seminars, STEM tasks, and creative writing, they build confidence as problem solvers.
This unit immerses students in the world of biomimicry and innovative design. Over four weeks, students explore how plants, animals, and environments inspire human solutions through Depth & Complexity challenges, logic puzzles, Leaf Art, engineering design tasks, and creative writing that deepen their understanding of adaptation and survival.
This unit immerses students in the craft of storytelling as they explore the habits and thinking of real authors. Over four weeks, students engage in Depth & Complexity challenges, logic puzzles, an Interactive Thinking Frame, and creative writing tasks that strengthen their understanding of reading, writing, and narrative craft.
This unit of the Enrichment Collection invites students to explore the science of weather and climate through the lens of meteorology. Over four weeks, students investigate patterns in weather systems, analyze data, and build understanding through Depth & Complexity challenges, a Socratic Seminar, logic puzzles, an Interactive Thinking Frame, and creative writing prompts that deepen their knowledge of weather and climate.
This unit of the Enrichment Collection introduces students to the world of economics as they explore how people make decisions, manage resources, and solve real-world problems. Over four weeks, students build economic thinking through Depth & Complexity challenges, logic puzzles, a Market Day math and economics project, and creative writing prompts that connect learning across math, social studies, and STEM.
